I was so incredibly lucky at last year's Spring workshop. The very lovely and very talented photographer, Evelyn Barkey, planned a trip to the UK (from the States) and worked her visit around the workshop date. Whilst she was here, she came along to photograph the workshop at The Forge in Bristol. Evelyn is such a kind, sweet soul and all of these lovely photos were taken by her. Thank you so much Evelyn. I will be forever grateful.
I love holding workshops at The Forge with its beautiful textural brick walls and huge windows and skylights which allow light to flood in from all around. It's such a beautiful, warm place to teach and everyone feels relaxed and comfortable pretty quickly here.
We start the day with a step-by-step demo on how I create natural, loose centrepieces without the need for floral foam. I explain my approach to colour and composition and talk about my favourite floral varieties.
Everyone is usually at a very different point in their career. Some have just started their own businesses, others have been in business for years and just want a day of inspiration or to learn new techniques. I've also had people attend who have no floral experience at all and they all produce incredible work.
This is my demo centrepiece, photographed so beautifully by Evelyn...
All of the following centrepieces and bouquets were made by the attendees. Such beautiful work!
We break for a light lunch (and cake of course) and talk about flowers and business and branding and photography and all of my favourite things! I love talking about business and answer everyone's questions about my approach - I'm an open book and encourage people to come armed with their questions.
After lunch I demonstrate my techniques for building large, loose bouquets before everyone gets started on their own gorgeous creations. All of the following beautiful bouquets were made by the attendees...
We use beautiful naturally dyed silk ribbons from the wonderful Lancaster & Cornish to finish our bouquets.
